Solar Design Concepts
The understanding that a “house is a system” is especially true when seeking 100% solar performance. The sun is a tremendous and reliable resource but it is intermittent, variable, highly distributed, and, not coincidentally, in limited supply when we need it most. An integrated plan is needed and everything must work together. Here are the solar design concepts and how I applied them to build our 100% solar home:
* I developed these two concepts, based on my needs. They are a different way of thinking that you may find helpful.

Solar Design Concepts
This is not a list of all solar or design concepts that may be combined to build an energy efficient house. It is a subset of key concepts that I utilized. There are many sources of information: books, magazines, websites, etc. I list books first because they provide depth, breadth, and are considered proven enough to be printed by someone, even if it is just the author, as opposed to the internet where someone can write whatever he or she thinks is best/important, as I do now! How I Applied
There are hundreds of ways to apply these concepts, depending on your goals. There are different walls structures, window and overhang combinations, mass and heating options. Literally thousands of different solutions for different overall goals, plus there are several different options for any given single objective. My choices, as your should, take into account, among other factors: cost, ease/speed of construction, space (thickness of wall, for example), material, and skills required. In other words, I am not presenting a generic home recommendation but rather an approach – understand your goals, understand your options, and apply the concepts in the best way to meet your goals.
