Home Heating Index
Calculating your Home Heating Index (HHI) will help tell
you whether your home is a Money Pit or a Money Saver.
The HHI is the number of BTUs per square foot per
Heating Degree Day. This measure allows you to compare
your home with another, either in the same area or a
different climate. This index is most appropriate for
homes in primarily heating climates, like ours. The HHI
also takes into account your personal conservation
measures – given two similar homes, an energy efficient
family will score much better than one that squanders
energy.
Enter the following information and press calculate to
get your HHI.
1. Enter the amount of fuel you use for heating your
home for one year. If you use the same fuel for heat and
hot water, for example, estimate the amount used for
heating only. If you use two fuels, enter both
2. Enter the square feet of heated space in your home.
